深入解读

Encroach 一词源自古法语 encrochier （字面意指“用钩子钩住”，引申指“抓住、系牢、紧紧抓住；终止、暂停”），14世纪末进入英语后原本用来表示“获取、得到”。

但到了1528年后， encroach 的含义开始演变为一种错误地夺取，即作贬义词表示“侵占、侵犯、侵害”他人的时间、权利、领地等，强调逐步地、慢慢地或暗中地占有本属于他人的领地、财产、权利等事物，或者掌控、影响他人的时间、工作、个人生活等，比如：

• 插手某事
  to encroach on sth
• 蚕食邻国的领土
  to encroach on the territory of a neighbouring country
• 干涉某人的隐私
  to encroach on sb's privacy

从这个概念出发， encroach 随后也被用来引申指“侵蚀、蚕食”土地、陆地等，主要指逐渐超越通常、适当或可接受的限度从而覆盖越来越多的土地，比如：

• 不断涌向陆地的潮水
  the encroaching tide
• 他们已经承诺这个开发项目不会侵占公共土地。
  They have promised that the development will not encroach on public land.

值得注意的是，在表示上述两个含义时， encroach 都常作正式用语，并和介词 on/upon 搭配使用。
